Just Got a Double Pedal? Here's How to Sound Good (Fast)

So you’ve just shelled out for a shiny new double pedal, dreaming of thunderous metal fills and machine-gun kicks. You sit down, give it a go… and what comes out sounds more “washing machine” than “war machine.”

We’ve all been there.

Double kick is hard - especially when your left foot’s been chilling on the hi-hat its whole life. But if you’re looking to learn how to play drums and actually sound good with both feet, you don’t need to wait months.

You just need the right approach.

In this blog, we cover five expert tips to sound better on a double pedal (without crying). These aren’t just exercises. These are actual musical ideas that work straight away - even if your left foot’s still waking up.

Let’s go.

Tip 1: Right-Left Burst

Start simple. One note per foot. Right - Left.

Use it in grooves. Use it in fills. Keep them clean, even and tight - usually as 16th notes. Think of it like a mini flurry. Short, punchy and surprisingly tasty.

Nail this, and you’re already further ahead than most beginners with a double pedal.

Tip 2: Bunched 32nds

Same sticking: right-left. But this time, squeeze those notes in closer, as 32nd notes, just before a hand accent or snare hit.

It’s a flick. A flash. A fast moment that makes your grooves and fills snap.

This kind of thing is gold if you’re learning how to play drums in modern styles where subtle flashes add loads of personality.

Tip 3: Triplet Coordination

Now we get into the footwork. Constant triplets on the kick, right hand riding over the top. Every third kick meets a stick.

Take it slow. Lock in the timing. Once it sits, it flows - and it sounds pro. This is coordination training with a musical payoff.

Again, if you’re trying to learn how to play drums and not just do drills, this is the kind of pattern that shows up in real music.

Tip 4: Short 16th Bursts

This is stamina training disguised as fun. Instead of trying to play 16ths forever - (spoiler: you won’t) - start with little blasts of four notes.

Right-left-right-left. Then stop. Drop it in between phrases. Add it to fills. It sounds fast, it sounds clean - and your calves don’t die.

Honestly, if you’re short on practice time, this is the best way to build up speed without burning out.

Tip 5: The “Fake” Gallop

So, why spend so much time perfecting a groove that’s supposed to sound simple?

Because that’s where the magic is.

When you master something this subtle, it sharpens every other aspect of your playing. Your ghost notes become cleaner. Your accents hit harder. Your sense of pulse and control improves - and suddenly, every other groove feels better, tighter and more confident.

In other words, the Texas Shuffle makes you a better drummer, which is why we love featuring it in our premium online drum lessons library.

Online Drum Lessons That Make You Feel the Groove

This one’s cheeky, but we love it.

The real double kick gallop is a tough nut to crack. So we fake it. Skip the middle note and just use groups of two. You get that driving, syncopated feel without needing total control of three-note flurries yet.

Once you’re used to it, you can rip it at speed. No shame here. If you’re learning how to play drums in metal, punk or hard rock, this hack is your new best friend.

Bonus Tip: Train Your Left Foot

Let’s be honest: your left foot is the weak link.

It’s spent its life opening hi-hats, not smashing bass drums. So if you want to build long-term stamina and control, make it groove.

One of the best things you can do is play regular single pedal grooves with your left foot. Forget the right. Let the left carry the beat. It’ll feel weird at first. Then it’ll feel powerful.

This is the kind of thing we encourage across all our lessons. If you want to learn how to play drums with balance, control and versatility, don’t skip the fundamentals. Just play them musically.
