An evening in three parts

Steve opens in conversation, from joining The Style Council as a teenager and playing Live Aid to his decades with Paul Weller and his first album as a bandleader.

Then it's over to the room. Ask about the records, the road, or what's kept him behind the kit for over 40 years.

Steve returns to the drums and the trio takes over.

More than a ticket

A drummer's night out

Sometimes the right room is enough to make you want to play again.

There is something different about standing close enough to see how a great player listens, responds and shapes the music around them. This is not a distant stage, a clinic or another interview watched through a screen. It is a night spent close to the stories, the decisions and the playing.

Come for Steve. Ask the question you have always wanted to ask. Hear the trio from a few feet away. You may leave with more than a good night out. You may leave wanting to get behind the kit.

The Steve White Trio, live

Soul Drums, live at the 100 Club

Soul Drums is Steve White's first album as bandleader and the opening release in Acid Jazz Records' Jazz Sessions series.

With Steve White on drums, Chris Hague on guitar and Joel White on keyboards, the trio brings together Hammond-led rhythm and blues, jazz roots, filmic melodies and deep soul grooves.

The album brings Steve back to My Ever Changing Moods, reworked for the trio he leads today.

This is not a demonstration added to the end of the conversation. It is a full live performance in a room built for music.

About Steve

More than four decades of music to talk about

Steve joined The Style Council at 17 and played across the records that introduced his feel and musical judgement to a generation of listeners.

His long partnership with Paul Weller continued through albums including Wild Wood, Stanley Road, Heavy Soul and As Is Now. His wider playing has taken in jazz, soul, rock and sessions with artists including The Who, Oasis, Ian Dury, the James Taylor Quartet and Squeeze.

Those names are part of the story. The more interesting part is what Steve heard, chose and learned along the way. Soul Drums brings those strands together, with Steve stepping forward as bandleader while still doing what he has always done best: listening closely, serving the music and making the room move.

Words from the members.

Watching this made me feel like I have a father. This helped with my technique. Thank you so much.

@LuigiNemuelBGrino

Double stroke rolls have always confounded me. This video is the best I've found, and is exactly what I needed.

@andyplaysdrums

No s***, no garbage and no smoke. Just the facts and technique. Thank you, Drum Dog.

@roobscoob47

I think you just made a lot of drummers happy and more confident we can get there. But the only way we get there, is practice, practice, practice.

@Cody-ry1dh

Hands down, the best, most informative content on the subject, drummers everywhere thank you. Killer job, mate.

@dalekay9ine

As a beginner drummer, this video helped me a lot. Thanks for straight-to-the-point content and great drumming.

@KutayYavuzMusic

I like it. It's different, love the engagement with shorts (tips, interviews) and backed by great lesson packs to keep diving into.
